Something fabulous has happened in Bristol: an almost all female mountain bike group has formed! Thanks to the genius who is Celia – @DrCMWay on Twitter – we have a group called Bikellas and we meet up to go pedaling in Ashton Court and the surrounding woods on Tuesdays. The group’s been running for three weeks and I’ve been along twice. The first time I went, there were five of us, but this week there were ten, including one chap.
It’s so good to finally be riding with some other women and I really feel like I’m going to get a lot from it. We’re a real mix of abilities and strengths and I think we’re going to be having a lot of fun.
I’ve already learnt new tricks from riding with the Bikellas. The first is that I finally have a way of remembering which brake lever corresponds with which brake – something I’ve never managed to get into my head before. I now just have to remember ‘rollypolly right’ to know that if I pull my right brake on hard I’ll go over the handlebars.
The second thing I learnt is something much more exciting…. I learnt to jump! That’s right, properly jump – two wheels off the ground, nicely landed jumping! Unfortunately, I have no photographic evidence of this, so that’s what I’m going to have to work on next week…
